The Right Dewalt Miter Saw for You

In order to decide on the right saw for you let’s have a quick look at the basics as this will help you to see what choices are available for you in comparison to your needs.

There are essentially three types of miter saws:

  1. Basic miter saw which has rotating head allowing you to cut at an angle (miter) but the blade always stays in vertical position.
  2. Compound miter saw (single & double bevel) – the same as basic type but additionally the blade can be tilted sideways to allow you cut at angles (miter and bevel) in both axes. These come in two variations depending on the ability of tilting the blade to one side (single-bevel) or both sides (dual-bevel).
  3. Sliding compound miter saw as the name indicates is essentially a compound miter saw with additional sliding rails allowing you to cut much wider work pieces without moving it around.

After this short introduction you might already have an idea what type of saw you need. As you will see your choice is limited to compound miter saws, but this is not a disadvantage whatsoever. Now let’s have a look at what Dewalt has to offer you (please note that this list might not be exhaustive):

  • DW712 – 8-1/2″ Single-Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw
  • DW713 – 10″ (254m) Single Bevel Miter Saw
  • DW715 – 12″ (305mm) Single-Bevel Compound Miter Saw
  • DW716 – 12″ (305mm) Double-Bevel Compound Miter Saw
  • DW717 – 10″ (254mm) Double-Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw
  • DW718 – 12″ (305mm) Double-Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw
  • DWS780 – 12″ Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw

Let’s have a brief look into each one and see what are the features and the pros & cons.

Dewalt DW712 is the smallest product in this range. This doesn’t have to be disadvantage though. Because of its size it’s very portable and very ease to move around. Equipped with 15 Amp motor which delivers 5400 RPM it is very capable saw. Of course because of the blade size DW712 has a limited capacity to handle very thick material (vertical capacity of 3-1/4″ for baseboard against the fence). Its horizontal capacity is increased because of the sliding feature. Amazon average rating is 4.4 out of 5 stars.

Dewalt 10″ sliding compound miter saw is probably the best choice as it is capability to size/weight ratio is an optimal combination for most users taking into account you can afford the price and have enough space in your workshop. DW713 has great reviews (Amazon rating 4.7 out of 5 – DW713/DW715 combined) and it’s even lighter than DW712 weighing just 35lbs which gives it a huge advantage being a great portable saw with increased vertical cutting capabilities.

Dewalt 717 miter saw has even more capacities than DW713 as it is a dual-bevel sliding saw. It is designed for bigger jobs and enables you to turn the saw rather than your workpiece.

Dewalt 716 miter saw is the most recommended 12-inch compound miter saw according to Consumer Research. With some playing DW716 is able to crosscut 2×10 in one go. This saw has great reviews and advantages being: dimensional capabilities, power, miter angles, adjustability, sturdiness and cost-to-benefit ratio.

Dewalt miter saw DW718 it’s the biggest model in whole range. It is 12-inch dual-bevel sliding compound miter saw giving it the best capacities for heavy-duty jobs. There are quite a few negative ratings due to poor dust collection feature (which is quite common issue with all miter saws) and also saw being not accurate out of the box which shouldn’t be really a big deal especially when you buy any tool online and it’s shipped to you via post or courier.

Additional Features

There are some additional features you might want to consider when buying a miter saw. The most common ones are:
- laser/LED guides
- dust extraction
- miter saw stands

DW7187 Dewalt miter saw laser functions as an attachment, so it’s completely optional. In bright light such guides can be of a little help, but check the below video to see it in action. Note that a lot of users express quite opposite opinions (at the time of writing 21 5-star ratings as well as 1-star ratings).

Dewalt DW7053 is a universal dust bag which works with all Dewalt’s miter saws. Dust collection is a big issue with regards to all miter saws and most of the users express negative opinions about that and no matter what manufacturer it is. Be sure you read some reviews and consider whether it’s absolutely essential before you make a purchase.

There’s also a range of miter saw stands available they have very positive feedback (especially DW723 miter saw stand – 4.6 out of 5 stars from 211 reviews). So if you need to create a workstation then Dewalt has some options with regards to that.

Endusers’ Feedback

After reading a lot of reviews, both positive and negative ones, we would recommend that you check the exact specifications of the products based on what your needs are and then reading some of the reviews to see whether they’re actually providing some value and input.

Below you can find a brief of what other’s are saying:

“Everything about this saw is sturdy, and all the adjustments can be made with very little effort. It’s also a little quieter than I expected, which is nice. You can’t go wrong with this saw.” DW713

“The reason I gave it 3 stars is that this is a bare bones saw compared to others on the market.” DW713

“Pros: Cost/bennefit, POWER!!!, miter angles, adjustability, sturdiness, dimensional capabilities.
Cons: none
The Bottom Line: Dewalts 12″ double-double is probably the last miter saw you will ever need.” DW716

“Pros: Double Bevel, 12″ Blade, laser attachment available, very reliable, easy to use
Cons: Very heavy, not easy to move
The Bottom Line: I definitely recommend this saw because this is one product that will make your life easier and your work faster. Time is money and this is well worth the money.” DW716
